It is recommended to make decision after 5-6 weeks of pregnancy and doctors will explain different methods of termination of pregnancy as well as the risks.

The commonly adopted methods:

Medical termination of pregnancy

  •  Might have risk that the products of conception might not be fully expelled, therefore follow up is required and further operation (Suction evacuation or uterine curettage) might be needed
  •  No anesthesia is required
  •  Might experience heavy bleeding, abdominal cramp or side effects of drugs include fever, shivering, nausea, diarrhea and allergy

Surgical termination of pregnancy (Suction evacuation or uterine curettage)

  •  The whole procedure will be carried out in hospital. Patient has to stay in hospital for 1 day
  •  Undergoes under general or monitored anesthesia
  •  Suction catheter will be inserted through cervix to empty the uterus by vacuum suction
  •  Experience shorter duration of bleeding and less pain
  •  Carries surgical risks
