Cervical incompetence

Cervical incompetence is a cervical disability that leads to miscarriage or preterm birth. It usually occurs in mid-trimester when there is increase in pressure of uterus. It usually not associates with contraction pain. Cervical incompetence might also increase the chance of ascending infection that result in miscarriage or preterm birth.

Cervical incompetence is not easy to be diagnosed. In mid-trimester, doctor will use transvaginal ultrasound to measure the cervical length, short cervical length will have higher chance of miscarriage or preterm birth although short cervix sometimes doesn’t mean cervical incompetence. Chance of miscarriage or preterm birth could be reduced through cervical length monitoring in high risk group with corresponding treatment.

If anyone who have the history of cervical incompetence or recurrent mid-trimester miscarriage or preterm birth, doctor might advise you for cervical cerclage at 14-16 weeks of pregnancy. Cervical cerclage is a surgical procedure that could reduce chance of mid-trimester miscarriage and preterm birth. It also reduces the chance of ascending infection that result in miscarriage or preterm birth. Besides, cerclage pessary and progesterone are other treatments to lower the chance of mid-trimester miscarriage or preterm birth.
