Non invasive prenatal test (NIPT) and first trimester combined Down's syndrome screening

Both non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and first trimester combined Down's syndrome screening pose minimal risk to the pregnant and the fetus, at the same time with high sensitivity in testing Down’s syndrome. Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) draws blood from the pregnant to analyse small fragments of the fetus’ DNA that are circulating in her bloodstream during pregnancy and could be performed after 10 weeks of pregnancy. First trimester combined Down's syndrome screening could be performed between 11 to 14 weeks pregnancy with different test modality and sensitivity.

Routine fetal morphology scan and 3D/4D ultrasound scan

A routine fetal morphology scan or anomaly scan is usually performed between 18-24 weeks of pregnancy to detect fetal structural abnormality. Pregnant usually only needs 2D ultrasound scan in most of their routine antenatal care. 3D and 4D ultrasound scan are getting more popular these days as a way for parents-to-be to ‘visualize’ the future baby. In the point of medical aspects, 3D and 4D ultrasound might sometimes help to assess structural defects which are found in 2D ultrasound.

Amniocentesis and Chorionic Villus Sampling

Amniocentesis is a procedure in which a small sample of amniotic fluid is collected from the womb (uterus) to check for any genetic or chromosomal conditions, such as Down’s syndrome. It is usually carried out after 16th week of pregnancy. Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is an alternative to amniocentesis that involves collecting a small sample of chorionic villi from the placenta to test for abnormalities and other genetic disorders. It is usually carried out between the 11-13th week of pregnancy.

Zenith Medical Centre also provides non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) services in Hong Kong that could screen for any genetic or chromosomal conditions under minimal risk for the pregnant woman and fetus. Get in touch with us to learn more.
