Routine fetal morphology scan and 3D/4D ultrasound scan

Routine fetal morphology scan

A routine fetal morphology scan or anomaly scan is a routine ultrasound performed to review the detailed structure of the baby and is recommended at 18-24 weeks gestation for all pregnancies. It is the best time to scan at 20-22 weeks of gestation. Most of the pregnancies are normal and a normal morphology scan could be reassuring. In case the fetus has structural defect, it might be important to find out before he or she is born. Early detection of the structural abnormality allows prenatal diagnosis. The parents, obstetrician and paediatrician might be better prepared for the birth of the affected fetus. For certain major congenital defects, the parents might have an option of termination of the pregnancy before 24 weeks of pregnancy.

3D/4D ultrasound scan

For most of the antenatal checkup or routine fetal morphology scan, 2D ultrasound is adequate for most of the assessment. The addition of 3D / 4D scan may enhance the bonding between the family and the unborn child. In some special case of fetal anomaly, 3D/4D ultrasound might help in diagnosis.
